Xiaomi Testing Pixel’s Astrophotography Alternative In MIUI 12 Camera

Google Pixel is known for producing unmatched photography shots. While the camera hardware does play a role, it is mostly the work of Google Camera (GCam) app features backed by Pixel’s on-device machine learning. One such feature is the Astrophotography mode, which can capture the night sky with great detail.

It appears that Xiaomi is trying to come up with an alternative to GCam’s Astrophotography feature in the MIUI 12 Camera app. Xiaomi is working on the long-exposure mode in the MIUI Camera app. The feature is available to users of MIUI 12 latest China beta ROM.

An MIUI camera app screenshot shared by a Poco F2 Pro user running the beta ROM shows different long exposure modes. The same was captured by XDA tipster Kacskrz and @Deiki in the code of MIUI Camera app from the latest MIUI 12 China Beta ROM.

As per the APK teardown, the feature will enable Xiaomi users to take images of moving crowds, starry sky, light paintings, silky water, and more. In other words, any environment that requires the use of slow shutter speed.

The MIUI Camera app feature is still in the beta stage, which means there is no guarantee if it will come to stable users. Moreover, Xiaomi could launch it on selected supported Mi devices, similar to how MIUI 12 Camera’s Magic Clone feature only supports a bunch of high-end devices.

In the meantime, interested users can try out GCam ports to get Pixel’s astrophotography feature on their Xiaomi device right now.

Recently, we heard that Xiaomi is also working on an alternative to Google camera’s Top-shop feature. It is another Google Pixel camera feature that captures a burst of images and selects the best photo.
