Samsung Is Working On Exynos Processor For Windows PCs

Now that Intel has begun to lose its grasp on the PC chip market, new competitors are coming up to leverage the now unpredictable market. Samsung may become the next big competitor for Intel, AMD, and Apple’s newly introduced custom ARM chips.

According to rumors, the Korean manufacturer is working on an Exynos processor for Windows PCs on ARM. For those who don’t know, ARM is a processor architecture that is different from the standard x64 and x86. Most smartphones and other small electronic devices come with ARM chips.

Back in 2017, Microsoft partnered with Qualcomm to allow Windows 10 to run on ARM-based Snapdragon chips. But if the rumor is true, we may see Windows 10 on ARM-powered by an Exynos processor.

Reportedly, the new processor from Samsung will be based on Exynos 1000. According to leaks, the rumored 5nm processor might power the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Also, the new Samsung chip for Windows PC will supposedly be called “Exynos 1.”

According to Sam Mobile, Samsung has already prototyped a PC version of Exynos 990 — the most recent and powerful processor from the smartphone manufacturer. However, the company doesn’t feel confident about it yet, and is, therefore, relying on a new chip.

Samsung’s in-house Exynos processors have more often than not lost to their competitors when comparing raw power. It will be interesting to see how the Exynos PC version stands up against other ARM-based processors.
