Lately, we have been hearing a lot about Tesla coming to India. Indeed, it’s true and Tesla is going to establish its R&D center and sales outlet in Karnataka, India.
The news is official as the world’s largest EV maker recently registered itself as Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt. Ltd. in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.
Soon after all the official work, CEO Elon Musk tweeted “As Promised” on his Twitter handle.
Well, you might be wondering why he tweeted just words. Don’t worry, you’ll get your answer, just keep reading.
Elon To Fulfill Its Promise By Starting Operations In India
Back in late 2020, an unofficial account of Tesla Motors Club India asked Elon about its plan on coming to India. On which he replied, “Next year for sure.”
Elon had made such statements through his Twitter account. In fact, in 2016 Tesla was almost ready to foray into the Indian market. The automaker even started taking orders. However, due to some government policies and insufficient EV infrastructure, it got delayed.
Here’s a detailed video on this matter.
Tesla To Open R&D Center And Sales Outlet In India
If we talk about the present, then, recently the MSME minister of India, Nitin Gadkari, also approved of the Tesla entry in early 2021.
Anyway, call it the supernatural effect of 2020 or anything else, the Tesla-India mission is reborn now, and very soon we’ll see Tesla electric cars running on Indian roads.
As mentioned earlier, its main headquarters will be in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
So, now the next question that arises is which electric car Tesla would be launching in India and its price?
What Will Be Tesla’s First Electric Car In India?
Initially, Tesla will be launching its best-selling electric car Model 3 in India. If we talk about the price, then it will be somewhere around Rs 60-70 lakh which is far too expensive than its original cost.
In the U.S., the price of the Tesla Model 3 starts at $37,990 (Rs 27.77 lakh).
These prices will be higher as the California-based EV maker will import fully furnished vehicles.
However, if in future Tesla starts manufacturing in India, then prices will reduce significantly.
As of now, there will only be an R&D center and sales outlet in Bangalore. Nevertheless, the sales outlets will be expanded to further major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, West Bengal etc.
However, it’s still unclear if there’ll be physical showrooms or will Tesla sell its electric cars online only.
