GhostBSD 21.01.15 Released: FreeBSD-Based User-Friendly Desktop OS

After GhostBSD 20.11.28 was released last year, a new version of FreeBSD-based GhostBSD 21.01.15 has been announced with the MATE desktop.

What’s New In GhostBSD 21.01.15?

The latest snapshot has cleaned up packages to enable running of ZFS RW live file systems without problem on the machine having 4GB of RAM.

Packages removed from the default selection include LibreOffice and Telegram.

Additionally, GhostBSD 21.01.15 no longer provides UFS (Unix File System) full disk support or option in the installer. However, you can still use custom partitions to setup a UFS partition, which is not recommended.

Furthermore, it has fixed default locale setup and added the default setup for Linux Steam.

Among other key changes and bug fixes, this is what GhostBSD 21.01.15 includes:

  • Removed slides from the GPI install.py
  • Fix Next button’s restriction in the custom partition
  • Update the supports of video drivers
  • Removed ghostbsd-common-setting package
  • Improved Software Station stability
  • Kernel, userland and application updates
  • Removed VirtualBox addition as default
  • Updated System installer backend pc-sysinstall

How To Download Or Upgrade To GhostBSD 21.01.15?

The official edition of GhostBSD comes with MATE desktop and a separate community edition with a lightweight Xfce desktop environment.

If you want to install it from scratch, you can directly download ISO images of any editions from the official page (64-bit only).

Or, if you’re already using it, you can simply update your system to reach the latest v21.01.15 by running the command:

$ sudo pkg update -f
$ sudo pkg upgrade

And check the status using the below command, which should return 21.01.15.

$ pkg query '%v' os-generic-userland-base
