Fedora 34 To Come With A New Spin Featuring i3 Tiling Window Manager

After Fedora 33 released last year, the next Fedora 34 is now getting ready to arrive in April this year.

Along with package update and other features in Fedora 34, it’ll now come with a new official Fedora Spin, which will feature a very well-known and lightweight i3 window manager.

The Fedora project has approved this new Fedora i3 Spin for version 34. However, if a blocker bug comes up to breaks composes of the i3 Spin in Fedora 34, the change can be bumped to a future Fedora release like Fedora 35.

Since no Fedora Spin currently features a window/tiling manager, it is also the first Fedora image that uses i3 tiling window manager instead of any traditional desktop environments like KDE, GNOME, or Xfce.

This also means if you want a combination of Fedora and i3 window manager, you no longer need to have other Fedora editions or spins and then install i3 window/tiling manager over it as you can now directly have a pre-configured ISO for the same.

The Fedora i3 SIG (Special Interest Group) has also outlined the goals of the Spin, which is as follows:

  • Simple to do basic computing tasks
  • Fast, lean, and quick instead of full of features
  • Maintaining a single obvious way to do basic computing tasks
  • Experiment with new ideas

If you run Fedora on your low-end desktop or laptop, it will definitely fit for you as it has the lightest footprint (memory and base install size) of any Fedora Edition or Spin.

So, if you want a Fedora with i3 window manager right now, you can build the ISO locally by following the official guide.
