Is PUBG Mobile A Chinese App? The Origin Of PUBG Explained

PUBG Mobile has taken over the world by storm. No other mobile game stands a chance against this enormous title. But recently, after the Indian Intelligence Agency listed 52 Chinese applications that should be boycotted, many players are also uninstalling PUBG Mobile.

However, a lot of people are still confused if PUBG Mobile is really a Chinese app. If you’re one of those players who is looking for an answer, then don’t worry, because we’ve got you covered.

Is PUBG Mobile A Chinese App?

The short answer to this question is YES. That is because the mobile version of PUBG is developed by Tencent, which is a Chinese conglomerate. However, there’s a lot more to it.

Origin Of PUBG

First of all, you need to understand that PUBG and PUBG Mobile are different games. PUBG was developed for PCs by PUBG Corp, a subsidiary of South Korean game developer Bluehole. So, the origin of PUBG is South Korea and not China.

A Little Bit Of Background

PUBG was released for PCs and consoles in 2017 and was a massive hit. To get the game in the Chinese market, Bluehole joined hands with Chinese game developer, Tencent

Tencent games also decided to develop a mobile version of the game, which is now called PUBG Mobile. However, Tencent couldn’t monetize PUBG Mobile in China because the game got banned by the Chinese government.

According to the Chinese government, PUBG Mobile is too violent and addictive. So, Tencent instantly developed a clone and ‘Patriotic’ version of PUBG Mobile, Game For Peace. Surprisingly, the Chinese government approved the clone version.

Conclusion

So, to sum it up, PUBG PC is not a Chinese game, but Tencent does benefit from the game because the company holds 11.5% stakes in Bluehole. Nevertheless, the maximum earnings of PUBG go to South Korea.

On the other hand, the developer of PUBG Mobile is Tencent games. Cutting aside the royalty Tencent pays to Bluehole, a considerable chunk of the money players spend on PUBG Mobile goes to China.
