GNOME 3.38 “Zacatecas”: What’s Coming In The Next Stable Release?

GNOME is one of the most popular desktop environments adopted by major Linux-based operating systems such as Ubuntu, Fedora, and Pop!_OS. GNOME 3.36 “Gresik” is the current stable branch released on March 11, 2020.

Continuing the development cycle for the upcoming stable version 3.38, GNOME 3.37.90 has recently been released, which serves as the first beta version towards the 3.38. Hence, in this article, I’ll list down all the important features coming in GNOME 3.38.0.

With v3.37.90, GNOME also marks the start of UI, features, and API freezes and preparations for the 3.38 release scheduled on September 16, 2020, before the release of the upcoming Ubuntu 20.10 and Fedora 33.

GNOME 3.38 Beta: What’s New?

The beta version has updated a lot of core packages and GNOME apps to fix bugs and add new enhancements. For instance, gsettings-desktop-schemas 3.37.2 has enabled USB protection by default, gnome-calendar 3.36.2 has moved calendar events out of notifications list.

GNOME shell 3.37.90 has also included a number of new changes, such as defaulting to not installing updates on low battery, adding “Boot Options” support to restart dialog, and moving the “Restart” option into a separate menu dialog.

Furthermore, it has also upgraded GNOME intial setup module to include a revamped welcome screen and adapted language page for 3.38.

Among GNOME applications, the Epiphany (GNOME Web) web browser now allows self-hosted sync servers and stores HTTP auth passwords in a password manager, GNOME Maps now features improved keyboard navigation for routing entries and an adaptive UI for the routing sidebar.

The Nautilus file manager now automatically escapes file names on NTFS and exFAT mounts, GNOME Boxes provide an editor for the libvirt VM configuration and GNOME Screenshot ports to libhandy.

How To Get GNOME 3.38?

If you want to try out the GNOME 3.38 before its official stable release, you can hop on its beta version 3.37.90. The virtual machine image is available to download from here.

However, if you want to compile GNOME 3.37.90, you can use its BuildStream project snapshot or source package.
