CentOS Linux 8.2 (2004) Released: Free/Community Version Of RHEL 8.2

The CentOS community has released the third iteration of CentOS Linux 8 series, tagged as 2004. The latest release, CentOS 8.2 (2004), supersedes the previous CentOS 8 (1911).

CentOS 8.2 is rebased on the newest Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.2 source code. Hence, CentOS 8.2 is fully compatible with upstream RHEL 8.2 and derives all major changes along with its own enhancements.

CentOS Linux 8.2: What’s New?

CentOS Linux 8.2 has majorly acquired several improvements from RHEL 8.2. For instance, it now includes the latest versions of developer tools such as GCC Toolset 9.1, Python 3.8, and Maven 3.6.

Among the security updates, v8.2 has added setools-gui and setools-console-analyses packages for SELinux-policy analysis and data-flow inspections. So, if you log into the system as an admin, you can customize system-wide cryptographic policies with updated crypto-policies.

Besides upstream updates, CentOS has modified several packages, including anaconda, apache-commons-net, basesystem, cloud-init, cockpit, dhcp, firefox, grub2, httpd, kernel, thunderbird, yum and PackageKit.

CentOS 8.2 has also added some packages that are not part of upstream RHEL 8.2 and removed some packages that are part of RHEL 8.2.

Here is the list of packages that are no longer present in CentOS 8.2:

How To Upgrade Or Install CentOS Linux 8.2?

If you’re using the previous version of CentOS, you should update your system to the latest CentOS Linux 8.2. To upgrade your system, you only need to run a single command:

sudo dnf update

If you are new to CentOS or want a fresh installation, you can download the ISO images of CentOS 8.2 directly from the official mirror repositories here. Images are available for three architectures: aarch64, ppc64le, x86_64.
