When Google said, “Everyone can Google Duo”, this is what the tech giant really meant! The video conferencing platform is rolling out a new update wherein up to 32 people can board group video calls on the web.
The limit was originally 8 people but Google extended it to 12 in March, in light of heavy demand due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Also in May, Google added a new family mode which allowed users to use AR filters and play with doodles.
Now users can hold group video chats with up to 32 people on the web, according to a tweet from Sanaz Lemelson, who is leading the communications suite at Google.

She also heads the Product & Design at the company, which means Google Duo gets full marks on the UI as well. Google Duo on the web offers a tiled UI where it puts everyone in little boxes and rounds the corners of each window to accommodate a large number of participants.
How to group video call on Google Duo web?
- Update Google Chrome to the latest version.
- Visit the Google Duo web version.
- Login using our Google account
- Enter your phone number.
- Tap on the “Create Group Link” beside the “Start a Call” button.
- Share the video call invite link with the participants or add them from your contacts.
- Tap on Start Call.
Strangely, I couldn’t find the feature on Google Duo official website, but it was available in the link shared by Sanaz in her tweet.
Behind the hood, Google Duo on the web is using the new WebRTC API to support end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for video calls.

Interestingly, only a handful of video conferencing tools use E2EE. One is Google Duo, the other is WhatsApp which recently extended group video calls participant limit from 4 to 8.
Zoom recently decided to offer E2EE on its platform after facing multiple security issues and falsely claiming to offer E2EE. However, the feature is only applicable to Zoom’s premium users, which is another big reason to choose Google Duo over Zoom.
