Fortnite: Epic Games May Sync Your Real-time Facial Expressions In The Game

Since its launch, Fortnite has continuously evolved to incorporate features that set it apart from other battle royale games. Now, Epic Games‘ biggest hit could take it up a notch by syncing players’ real-time facial expressions with their avatar.

This speculation stems from Fortnite-maker’s recent acquisition of Hyprsense — a company that specializes in animating facial motion capture.

If you don’t know, Hyprsense is the developer of Hyprmeet, the app that turns your face into a fully-customizable animated avatar during video conferences. Hyprmeet relies on the webcam feed to translate your facial expressions onto your avatar in real-time.

After Epic Games’ takeover of Hyprsense, the chances are that this technology could carry over to the gaming giant’s magnum opus, Fortnite. Moreover, Epic’s ever-evolving approach with the multiplayer game further strengthens the case.

In a short time, what started as a battle royale title has transformed into a bona fide social hub where you could dive straight into a firefight or attend a virtual concert with other players. Adding support for real-time facial expressions would undoubtedly amplify Fortnite’s online social experience.

According to The Verge, there is no confirmation from Epic about how it plans to use Hyprsense’s resources. However, what’s worth noting is that the Hyprmeet beta that was released earlier this year in September is currently unavailable. This signifies that the app could soon release in a form that aligns with its new owner’s vision.

Whether Hyprmeet comes out as a separate entity or as another Fortnite enhancement is anyone’s guess right now. But, given Epic likes expanding Fortnite’s horizons, it won’t surprise us if this technology was absorbed into the game.
