Lightweight Puppy Linux 9.5 Released, Based On Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Puppy Linux is a very small and lightning fast Ubuntu-based operating system. If you ever search for the best lightweight Linux distros, you would definitely find Puppy Linux on the list.

Now, after more than one and a half years, the Puppy Linux team has announced a new version, Puppy Linux 9.5, aka, Fossapup64 9.5. The latest Puppy 9.5 is also the first release based on the current long-term Ubuntu 20.04 “Focal Fossa.”

Being based on Ubuntu, Fossapup64 is built from Ubuntu Focal Fossa DEB (64 bit) packages along with Puppy Pets packages. Therefore, it also has binary compatibility with Ubuntu and access to the Ubuntu Focal Fossa repositories.

Under the hood, Puppy Linux 9.5 has upgraded its Linux kernel from the previous v4.19.23 to the latest long-term v5.4.53.

On the software side, as usual, similar to previous Puppy 8.0, Puppy 9.5 has also included default JWM window manager, ROX file manager, Palemoon web browser, Hexchat, Quickpet, Osmo Calendar, Abiword Word Processor, and Claws mail client. And among the media players, it has MPV, Deadbeef and Gogglesmm.

Furthermore, Fossapup64 9.5 has also lots of in-house puppy-specific applications such as Pburn, PuppyPhone, Find’n’run, Take A Gif, Uextract, Packit, Dunst-config, Picom-gtk, Transtray, Janky Bluetooth, Change_kernels, JWMdesk, YASSM, Redshift, and SimpleGTKradio.

Lastly, if you want to revive your old computer or adventure on an amazing lightweight operating system, download the ISO image of Puppy Linux 9.5 from here.

The ISO image size is only 409MB, which you can boot directly from CD, USB, SD card, or network access. The minimum system requirement is a 64-bit CPU with 2GB of RAM.
