Debian LTS Team Will No Longer Support Debian 8 ‘Jessie’ GNU/Linux

On June 30, 2020, the long-term Debian 8 “Jessie” reached its end-of-life (EOL). Subsequently, the Debian Long Term Support (LTS) Team has officially announced that it will no longer provide further security patches or any other updates to Debian 8.

Hence, if you’re using Debian 8, you should upgrade your system to the next long-term Debian 9 “Stretch.” However, you can still extend the lifetime of Debian 8 for a further five years under the Extended Long Term Support (ELTS) by paying some money.

Debian GNU/Linux 8 was released on April 25, 2015, with 5-year long-term support. After completing its lifetime, Debian 8 “Jessie” has now become the current ELTS release with extended support for the enterprise.

Debian 9 “Stretch” LTS

With EOL of Debian 8, Debian 9 is now the current LTS version, which will receive a final point update on July 18, 2020. Also, the Debian LTS Team will provide long-support for Debian 9 from July 06, 2020, to June 30, 2022.

Debian 9 was released on June 17th, 2017, with major changes such as the default MariaDB replacing MySQL, improved APT package manager, “modern” branch of GnuPG in the gnupg package, Firefox, and Thunderbird.

As per the official statement, Debian 9 stretch LTS only supports i386, amd64, arm64, armed, and armhf architecture. Therefore, if you want support for other architecture, you can go for the latest stable Debian 10 “Buster.”

How To Upgrade From Debian 8?

If you want to upgrade from Debian 8 to the next LTS, you first need to update your /etc/apt/sources.list and then run the commands:

sudo apt clean
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt autoremove
