Among Us Hacker Forces Devs To Release An Emergency Fix

The immense popularity of Among Us has not only attracted a deluge of players but also a fair share of hackers. The most recent hack by Eris Loris prompted developer InnerSloth to quickly release an emergency fix.

The devs were sprung into action by Loris’s hack which caused players to spam the in-game chat with his social channels. However, InnerSloth’s prompt reaction seems to have fixed the issue.

For those who don’t know, Among Us is an online multiplayer social deduction game from InnerSloth. Although released in 2018, it wasn’t until mid-2020 that the game’s player base shot up after several streamers started broadcasting it.

The latest Among Us hack, orchestrated by Eris Loris, forced players to advertise his YouTube and Twitch, along with some cheat-based websites, in the in-game chat. In several versions of the spam, the hacker also threatens to “hack your device” or “blow up your phone”, if you don’t subscribe to his social channels.

Moreover, some versions also end with an explicit political message, “Trump 2020.”

The Aftermath Of The Among Us Hack

Soon after the bots started affecting numerous users, InnerSloth tweeted that it was “super duper [sic] aware” about the problem and was working on a solution. In the same post, it encouraged users to play in private lobbies to avoid facing reported issues.

One of the Among Us devs, Forrest Willard, soon followed this announcement by confirming that a server patch built to tackle the bots had been released. Since then, there have not been virtually zero reports of the problem.

Reacting to the outrage caused by the hack, Loris told Kotaku, “The anger and hatred is the part that makes it funny. If you care about a game and are willing to go and spam dislike some random dude on the internet because you can’t play it for 3 minutes, it’s stupid.”

In his reply to Kotaku, Loris also revealed his purpose behind the attack. “I was curious to see what would happen, and personally I found it funny,” he said.

The Eris Loris hack has shown how vulnerable the servers of one of the most popular games are at the moment. It is time the dev team at InnerSloth pull up their socks and consolidate the game’s servers to repel similar attacks in the future.
